LOCAL SITES

Many of the historical sites are in close proximity to one another, and can be worked into a fun packed on or two day trip around Springfield.

Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum & Library

This 200,000 square foot site includes the Archive, Museum, galleries and live and filmed theater presentations. The presidential library is just across the street. Fun fact: This is 50% larger than any other presidential library.

Abraham Lincoln House and Neighborhood

Four blocks restored to their 1800s appearance, dating back to Lincoln's time and an heirloom garden. One of the houses belonged to a conductor for the Underground Railroad.

Old State Capitol

Used from 1840 to 1876, the Old State Capitol has been restored to showcase how it functioned historically. You can also see a display of the entrants of the Abraham Lincoln Collection Art Contest. Tours must be reserved. The Old State Capitol; is only a walk away from Union Station.

Lincoln Depot

The old train depot where Lincoln would departed Illinois upon being elected President.

Union Depot

A former train station, the Depot is now the Springfield Visitor Center, a great place to get information and also picturesque with it's tall, red brick clocktower and well kept park

State Capitol

Opened in 1877, and it still the center of Illinois State Governement. With it's 405 foot dome and free tours, this site is well worth a stop.

Governor's Mansion

1855 chic, now a museum.

Elijah Illes' House

Built in 1837 by one of the four men who founded Springfield. The interior woodwork is original and there is a collection of pre-Civil War furniture. Tours run Wed - Sat, April through October.

Vachel Lindsay House

Poet, illustrator and film critic. Learn more about this well known artist during a 30 minute guided tour of his home. Reservations are recommended.

Dana Thomas House

Point of historical architectural interest. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Reservations required.

Lincoln-Herndon Offices

Restored law office where Abraham Lincoln worked for 25 years. Built in the 1840s. Currently undergoing restoration.

Illinois State Museum

Geared toward families with interactive displays for children and a changing list of displays, collections and events.

Lincoln's New Salem

Visit a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood. Includes historic demonstrations spread around the village.

Illinois Amish Heritage Center

Currently rebuilding one of two historic Amish homes. The center has demonstrations throughout the year for farming, sheep shearing, wool processing, Amish life, beliefs and history.

Washington Park Botanical Garden

Free admission to a beautiful garden in the 20 acre park. There are educational workshops throughout the year.

Illinois State Fair

Filled with entertainment, food and fun. Check the website for events and ticket information.

Lincoln Memorial Garden

Five miles of trails along a park situated on Lake Springfield. The Garden has a nature Center with several activities and also educational workshops throughout the year. Check the website for workshop schedules or fees.

Lake Springfield

A 4200 acre reservoir, the largest municipally owned in Illinois. Open for water sports, fishing and boating. There are several public boat docks and launches and eight public parks on the lake. Check local regulations on licensing requirements for boating and fishing. Rentals are available at the Marina and other locations.

Henson Robinson Zoo

A zoo located on the lake. Currently houses 80 special of animals. May have seasonal hours. Check the website.

Edwards Place

A fun historical house with plays, murder mystery dinners, teas, ice cream socials, educational lectures and other events. even a museum. Check the site for ticket prices.

Knight's Action Park

Water park, mini golf and rides. Next to the Route 66 Drive-In.

Route 66 Drive-in

Classic drive-in with a snack bar, three screens, a small play area and radio channel audio for the movie. Open nightly during the summer.

Illinois Symphony Orchestra

The orchestra travels all throughout Illinois. Check the schedule for location and ticket prices.
