Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a modern, evidence-based approach that helps people develop psychological flexibility, the ability to stay present, open, and engaged in life even when difficult thoughts or emotions arise. Rather than trying to eliminate distress, ACT teaches skills that change how you relate to internal experiences so they no longer control your behavior.

ACT is grounded in behavioral science and mindfulness principles. It recognizes that pain, anxiety, grief, and intrusive thoughts are part of being human. The goal is not to fight or suppress them, but to reduce their power while increasing your ability to act in ways that align with your values.

ACT focuses on six core processes:

  • Acceptance of thoughts and emotions instead of avoidance

  • Cognitive defusion (learning to step back from unhelpful thoughts)

  • Present-moment awareness

  • Observing self (building perspective and internal stability)

  • Clarifying personal values

  • Committed action toward meaningful life directions

 

In sessions, an ACT therapist may use experiential exercises, metaphors, mindfulness practices, and structured reflections to help clients notice patterns of avoidance and build new ways of responding. The therapy is active and collaborative, often focusing on real-life application rather than long analysis of the past.
